Biography

Fine Artist • Innovator • Mentor

Jack Whyte is a timeless creator who wields over 65 years of experience as a professional fine artist. He was born in 1939, just before the start of the second world war, in Toronto, Ontario. His early childhood experiences included modelling and learning from his father, who was an illustrator and travelling salesman, all of which proved to leave lasting impressions as Jack pursued a lifelong interest in art.
Although Jack has never received formal training or schooling, his repertoire of styles and abilities is countless, having studied and practiced many techniques with numerous types of media throughout the years. His unique use of materials serves as an example of resourcefulness that is only found in working with what you have – something which he has mastered and continues to employ.
Outside the realm of traditional fine arts, Jack has also participated in video-making, independent publishing and installation art, all of which are highlighted in his autobiography ‘Scrapbook: a story of art’.
Jack has lived in many places throughout Ontario, but he frequented Manitoulin Island from a young age and Gore Bay eventually became his permanent residence where he has now resided for well over 50 years.
Today, many of his works are exclusive records of Canadian heritage and culture, including the many farms, buildings, acreages and lighthouses that no longer exist. In his art, you’ll find the stories of life on Manitoulin, its natural beauty, as well as its hardships and development through the course of nearly 60 years.
